David Beckham Dethroned as Top Earner In Football

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=lionel+messi&iid=8126682″ src=”7/4/1/e/Barcelona_vs_Malaga_b6e8.jpg?adImageId=11644866&imageId=8126682″ width=”480″ height=”330″ /]

Lionel Messi scored his second hatrick in a row in  Barcelona’s 4-2 win over Zaragoza on Sunday. The little Argentine’s sensational form has drawn comparisons to the world’s greatest player with many arguing that he in fact is the greatest player to ever play the beautiful game. So it isn’t very surprising that he has replaced David Beckham to become the best-paid footballer in the world according, to France Football magazine’s annual “rich list“. The Argentina forward is said to have made £29.6m (sum of salaries, bonuses and sponsorships) last year making him the 4th highest paid athlete in the world, behind Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and LeBron James.

Messi , who helped Barcelona win the treble last season was paid a £3.6 million bonus which is what helped him de-throne David Beckham who has held the top spot on the rich list for the last 2 years. The falling value of the dollar is another factor working in favour of the magnificent Messi.

David Beckham came in at number 2 with an annual income £27.3 million followed closely by Messi’s predecessor as the World Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo  raking in £27 million.

France’s Football Magazine’s Rich List

1.Lionel Messi (Barcelona) £29.6m
2. David Beckham (LA Galaxy/Milan) £27.3m
3. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) £27m
4. Kaka (Real Madrid) £16.9m
5. Thierry Henry (Barcelona) £16.1m
6. Ronaldinho (AC Milan) £15.5m
7. Carlos Tevez (Manchester City) £13.8m
8. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Barcelona) £13m
9. Frank Lampard (Chelsea) £12.8m
10. Samuel Eto’o (Inter Milan) £12.4m

It is interesting to note that only two of the players in the top-ten highest paid footballers, Frank Lampard of Chelsea and Carlos Tevez of Manchester City ply their trade in the English Premier League. This strange statistic probably because of  the big earners wanting to escape the large hike in taxes for high income earners in the UK.

It is also interesting to see, that although the reported incomes are very high, they are not even close to the kind of money that is made by boxers or Formula 1 racers. Of course, the difference in the salaries could be justified by  pointing out that footballer don’t literally put their life at risk like racers or boxers do. Footballers incomes have increased many fold in the last few years but it is very surprising indeed to not that they are still very far-off from the incomes earned in American sports by NFL, NBA or MLB sportsman.

No David Beckham at the World Cup!

David Beckham’s dream of playing in a fourth World Cup was brought to an end by an Achilles tendon injury. The LA Galaxy star who is on-loan to AC Milan ruptured his Achilles tendon during AC Milan’s match against Cheivo on Sunday. The midfielder pulled out of the centre circle whilst under no pressure from the opposition just two minutes from time. He hopped on his healthy leg to the touchline and after several minutes of treatment was carried to the dressing room on a stretcher in tears as he mouthed  “its broken, its broken” to the crowd.

The England international has already undergone surgery in Finland and his surgeon Sakari Orava confirmed that the operation was a success. When asked about the possibility of David Beckham being able to play in this year’s World Cup Mr Orava said, “No, I don’t think so….healing takes a long time,” he said. Beckham’s foot will be in a cast for around six-eight weeks, after which he can start “more vigorous” physiotherapy.

Due to the severity of the injury it was speculated that David Beckham’s career would be over, however, his agent Simon Oliviera inisited, “This is not the end of his playing career – as has been suggested.”
“Even if David does miss the World Cup, he is aiming to play [with LA Galaxy] towards the end of the Major League Soccer season.”

England coach Fabio Capello, who has yet to finalise his squad for the World Cup, said Beckham would be a loss for the finals in South Africa. “David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow,” he said.

David Beckham had really been hoping to be included in the England World Cup squad and his loan stints in Milan were a deliberate and most observers believe successful attempt to showcase his talent and match-turning abilities to the England manager. This latest injury just adds to the many heartbreaks suffered by David Beckham at previous World Cups. He was sent off in England’s match against Argentina blamed for England not winning the World Cup in 1998, in 2002, he was still recovering from a broken metatarsal in his foot and 2006 he had to retire hurt after  sustaining a tear in his right Achilles tendon. Later, Beckham tearfully resigned from the England captaincy.
Beckham on his website said that he was upset but thanked everyone on for their messages and that he hopes “to make a swift and full recovery”.

Champions League Draw: Will the Returning Heros Conquer?

The one thing the Champions League promises is great football with the best teams competing for the ultimate prize in Europe. Sometimes it can also promise that extra bit of drama which intriguing fixtures bring with them like 2 fixtures from today’s Champions League draw pitting a former ‘jilted’ manager against his old club, a super-star player returning to play against the club where he became the super-star that he is and a good old-fashioned managerial rivalry.

Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan drew Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea which means the ‘Special One’ will be returning to Stamford Bridge just 2 years after being sacked (oops! I meant after leaving the club ‘by mutual consent’). Jose Mourinho lead Chelsea to two Premier League titles and two Champions League semi-finals and surely will be warmly received by the fans at Stamford Bridge but they will also be all too aware of his strategic genius and wary of his famous mind games.

Carlo Ancelotti who is no stranger to Jose’s ways said “I’m not ready to play mind games. I never will be ready to play these games. I prefer to play football matches. I have experience of what he’ll do.”

The two managers have never really gotten along with Jose Mourinho once famously saying that the former AC Milan manger Carlo Ancelotti was ‘no friend of his’  but Ancelotti is hoping to change that.  “If we don’t have a good relationship, this game can be a good opportunity to return to a good relationship,” said Ancelotti.

Mourinho who was adored by the players and the fans alike was quite unceremoniously sacked by Chelsea after being one of their most successful managers and will definitely be looking to prove a point. Carlo Ancelotti understands this perfectly,”I think that, for him, it will be an emotional game. He did a very good job here in Chelsea so to play against Chelsea won’t be easy for him. He will do his best to win.

“Mourinho did a very good job and maintained a very good relationship with these players. That’s normal. They won things and this will be a reminder of those seasons.”

Ancelotti added “It’s difficult because I think that Inter are, at this moment, the strongest team in Italy. They are at the top of the table. It’s difficult also for them, though, to play against Chelsea.”

[picapp align=”center” wrap=”false” link=”term=david+beckham+milan&iid=3588937″ src=”7/0/5/b/20.JPG?adImageId=8469622&imageId=3588937″ width=”500″ height=”333″ /]

Another fixture that stands out from the draw is Manchester United versus AC Milan. This tie will see the return of David Beckham to Old Trafford. David Beckham is now a global superstar but was once one of ‘Fergies Fledglings’. Sir Alex Ferguson runs a tight shift and doesn’t tolerate superstars in his dressing room and his relationship with Beckham started to deteriorate as a result of Beckham’s commitments away from football. The fledgling grew up and spread his wings all the way to Real Madrid and then LA Galaxy This is the first time he will be returning to play where it all started. Also  both these sides are footballing giants and have won 10 European Cups among them. The Italians triumphed in the 2007 semi-finals of this competition which was the last time that the two sides faced each other but both teams are quite changed since 2007  and without players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Paolo Maldini.

Let the games begin!

Last 16 draw

Internazionale v Chelsea

Lyon v Real Madrid

Milan v Manchester United

Olympiakos v Bordeaux

FC Porto v Arsenal

CSKA Moscow v Sevilla

Stuttgart v Barcelona

Bayern Munich v Fiorentina

The first-legs ties will be played on 16-17 February and 23-24 with the second-leg ties on 9-10 and 16-17 March.

The David Beckham Art

No matter how many underwear ads he steals off of him David Becham has proved Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t know nothing about promotion yet.  A painting of Becks’ footprint has sold for half a million dollars! The 21st Century Leadership Awards were held in Doha, Qatar, last Friday. The event included an auction of unique art pieces, one of which was a painting by renowned contemporary artist Sacha Jafri: ‘David Beckham – A Celebration’ . Originally valued at $1.4mn, the painting raked in the lion’s share of the total 1.26 mn raised by the event, the proceeds of which will go to various charitable programmes chosen by the celebrities involved. The painting which is a celebration of the achievements of David Beckham on and off the field is the only painting in the world featuring both his footprint and signature!

Strangely this isn’t the first time Beckham’s footprint has graced Sacha Jafri’s canvas. About three years back  Sacha made ‘Celebration’ – a 6ft by 7ft painting which represented different aspects of Beck’s life featuring 12 of his many goals and 4 of his several hairstyles. The Mohican, the hairband , the swept to the side and  the slick look all made it in to this incredible painting however his wifeVictoria Beckham didn’t!  The painting was bought by a mystery buyer at an auction for £125,000

Besides Beckham’s footprint ‘Celebration’ also included the handprints of Rio Ferdinand, Paul Gascoigne, Paul Merson, Cesc Fabregas, (get ready for this Chelsea fans)… John Terry, Frank Lampard, Rudd Gullit and Gianfranco Zola!

Now thats what I call a peice of art!

Can you guess which ones are the Chelsea lads handprints?

The Sorcerer And The Superstar: Wizard Curses Cristiano Ronaldo

Barack Obama has added another amazing achievement to his year by winning the Nobel Peace Prize. What a year it has been for him. If he were a footballer, he would be the guy who won FIFA World Player of the Year, European Footballer of the Year, UEFA Club footballer of the Year and had the European Golden Shoe proudly displayed in his ever-growing trophy cabinet. He would be the highest paid footballer in the world. He would be Cristiano Ronaldo! Too bad for Ronaldo that he is not, like Obama, the most powerful and arguably the most respected man in the world.

[picapp src=”e/9/4/2/b7.JPG?adImageId=5659952&imageId=2709875″ width=”380″ height=”436″ /]

Footballers have to get used to seeing frivolous headlines about themselves in the tabloids and learn to either enjoy and revel in the silliness of it all or completely ignore it. Also, they realize soon enough, that the bigger star they become, the more ridiculous the stories get. So when the second-largest Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo, broke the news of a Wizard claiming he had been contacted to put on a curse on Cristiano, I am sure the Portuguese superstar smiled his smug smile and patted himself on the back. I mean, could the headline get any sillier?

It turns out ‘Pepe’ – The Wizard is quite the Harry Potter of Football sorcerer. Cristiano Ronaldo joins David Beckham, Carlos Queiroz, Esteban Cambiasso, Brazilian Ronaldo, Iker Casillas, Raul, Cannavaro and Sergio Ramos in the impressive list of people lucky enough to be cursed by our illustrious ‘soccerer.’ But first of all, I’d like to thank you, oh noble Wizard, for thinking us important enough to let us in on your evil plans. It gives us a warm fuzzy feeling. Wizards of the past have been downright rude by not even letting us know before they turn our favorite footballers into bats, or even worse vegetables.

The wonderful Wizard also said that he himself had nothing against the star and that he couldn’t violate the Wizard-Client (weirdo) confidentially law and tell us who the client was. He said his client was a “jilted lover”, “non-European” and “a very wealthy heiress from a well-known family”. Hail, thou Sly Sorcerer!

The story has the makings of a movie of the forgotten Bollywood era, which was obsessed with spells and sly serpentine women. And like the pathetic era, this story should have died a fast death in this super-fast information age. Alas, Cristiano picked up an ankle injury playing in the match against Marseille, which his team Real Madrid won 3-0. The wily Wizard was ‘lightening-quick’ to claim credit for the injury but no one really cared. It was only when Cristiano had to miss the next match which Madrid lost and when Portugal haven’t already claimed their spot in the 2010 World Cup, that fans all over the world started to somewhat fear the mighty Wizard’s ways!

Mr. Wizard, I hope you realize that we fans, are always quick to buy into conspiracy theories when our team loses. We never believe that the other team could have played better than ours. As, for Cristiano, he is currently busy replacing David Beckham in the Georgio Armani ads while he recovers from his ankle injury. So Mr. Wizard, enjoy you few moments in the limelight, `coz as soon as our ‘Wing Wizard’ is back to winning ways, you’ll have to go back to searching for hairs off the tail of a red donkey picked in the light of a full moon; or whatever it is you fake Wizards do for kicks.
