How Your Team Can Qualify

Argentina

Argentina are at the top of Group B having won both their matches. They won 1-0 against Nigeria in their opening match and then went on to do wonders for their goal difference by thrashing Korea Republic aka South Korea 4-1. A win would see the South Americans progress to the last 16 without having lost a game, however even a draw with Greece today is enough for them to go through. If Argentina lose to Greece today, they will still go through (oh glory glory Maradona!), however goal difference will come into play to decide who goes through as the winner of Group B as both Argentina and Greece will have 6 points. For Greece to topple Argentina from their perch at the top of Group B, they must beat Maradona’s team by a 3 goal margin.

Another thing that can happen, is that Greece beat Argentina and South Korea beat Nigeria, then all three teams will be level at 6 points and goal difference will decide which two teams progress to the knockout stages.

South Korea

South Korea played Greece in their first match and won 2-0. They made the former European champions look very ordinary and showed the world that the Asians cannot be taken lightly in the tournament. They then played Argentina and lost 4-1, subduing some of our enthusiasm about the team. However, any team that can be disciplined enough to not get over-awed by Argentina and even score a goal cannot be all bad. South Korea have 3 points and if they win against Nigeria today and the match between Argentina and Greece ends in a draw or a win for Argentina, Korea go through as runners-up.

However, if Greece beats Argentina and South Korea win their match, then the team with a better goal difference goes through. Since Korea and Greece have the same goal difference, Korea must beat Nigeria by a bigger margin than by which Greece beat Argentina to go through on goal difference.

If Korea draw their match while Greece win theirs against Argentina, Korea go out of the competition. However, if the match between Argentina and Greece also ends in a draw then Korea go through on the basis of goals scored.

Greece

Greece’s World Cup opener was a disappointing and shocking 2-0 loss to Korea. The Greeks however made amends and won their second match 2-1 against Nigeria. They sit level on points as well as goal difference with Korea, however, Korea have scored one more goal than Greece. If Greece beat Argentina today and Korea either draws or loses to Nigeria then Greece go through. However, if Greece win their match and Korea beat Nigeria, all three of them will be level on 6 points and the winners and runners-up up of the Group will be decided by goal difference.

If Greece draw their match against Argentina and Korea wins its match against Nigeria, then Greece are out. Also, if Greece draw their match against Argentina and the match between Korea and Nigeria also ends in a draw then it goes to goals scored which Korea lead by 1, so Greece do not go through. So the best way for Greece to stay in the race is to win their match and hope for Korea to either lose or draw against Nigeria.

Nigeria

It hasn’t been a great tournament for African teams and it isn’t very different for Nigeria who are yet to win a match in the World Cup 2010. They were unlucky enough to have to play their first match against Argentina, however, Nigeria was not completely humiliated by the South Americans and lost by a narrow  1-0. The played Greece next, and here again lost by a narrow 2-1. They have no points so far and will want to get at least a point today to show for their World Cup campaign. However, a point will not be enough for them to progress to the last 16, they need a win today to have an outside chance of qualifying. Other than winning their match, Nigeria also need Argentina to win their game against Greece, for if Greece take any points from their game, Nigeria are out.  Now, if these two things happen ie that Nigeria win against Korea and Greece lose to Argentina, that would see South Korea, Greece and Nigeria, all with 3 points. This scenario would guarantee Nigeria going through on goal difference.
