World Cup 2010 Group H: Qualification Scenarios

Group H took a fascinating turn when Spain lost to Switzerland. Until then the Group seemed fairly predictable but now a lot depends on the results of today’s games as all  4 teams have a chance of making it to the next round. The best bit however, is that Chile and Spain play each other. Both these teams are extremely attack-minded and Spain need to go all out since they can’t leave the game to chance as they might miss out on qualifying.  Chile want to remain in the top spot since the runners up from this group will most likely play Brazil  in the next round. Switzerland take on Honduras in the other game and will fancy their chances as Honduras are yet to win a game. Honduras on the other hand also have an outside chance of qualifying if they win today.

How Your Team Can Qualify

Chile

Chile opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Honduras and then won with the same scoreline against Switzerland. They are currently top of Group H with 6 points.

If Chile draw/win their match against Spain, they go through as winners of Group H.

However, if Chile lose to Spain, then they need the Switzerland-Honduras match to end in either a draw or a win for Honduras. If Switzerland win then Chile need to be ahead of Switzerland on goal difference to qualify.

Spain

Spain started off their World Cup campaign in a shocking manner losing 1-0 to Switzerland. They bounced back and looked a lot more like the Spain we know in their next match. La Roja beat the Central Americans 3-0. They play the group leaders today and will go all out to try and knock them off their perch in Group H. No one could have predicted that the last match of the group stages will become a must-win for the European champions to secure their position in the last 16.

Spain are currently second in the group table with 3 points, ahead of Switzerland on goal difference. To go through to the last 16 as winners of Group H, Spain need to win against Chile and hope that the Switzerland-Honduras match ends in either or draw or a win for Honduras. If Switzerland win their game against Honduras, Spain can still go through as Group H winners provided they are ahead of Switzerland on goal difference.

A win over Chile, guarantees Spain a spot in the last 16. If the Chile-Spain match ends in a draw, then Spain can qualify only if the match between Switzerland and Honduras also ends in either a draw or a win for Honduras. However, if Spain lose to Chile, they can still qualify if the Switzerland-Honduras match ends in a win for Honduras, that leaves Spain ahead of both Honduras as well as Switzerland on goal difference.

Switzerland

Switzerland started their World Cup campaign with an impressive 1-0 win over Spain 1-0. Their next match unfortunately wasn’t as impressive as they lost to 1-0 to Chile. They are in third position in Group H, level on points with Spain. They play Honduras today and will fancy their chances of qualifying as their match is definitely easier than that of Spain’s against Chile.

To go through to the last 16 as winners of Group H, Switzerland need to win their match against Honduras and hope that the Chile-Spain match ends in a win for Spain that leaves Switzerland ahead of  both Spain and Chile on goal difference.

Switzerland qualify if they win against Honduras and the match between Chile and Spain ends in either a draw or a win for Chile.  However, if Spain win, Switzerland can still qualify provided they win their match against Honduras and are ahead of Spain on goal difference. If the Chile-Spain match ends in a win for Chile, Switzerland need only a draw against Honduras to qualify. If Switzerland lose to Honduras, they can still qualify if the Chile-Spain match ends in a win for Chile  that leaves Switzerland ahead of both Spain and Honduras on goal difference.

Honduras

Honduras are a team with very limited resources and many injury problems. They played World Cup opener against Chile and lost by a narrow 1-0. However, that was mainly because Chile couldn’t capitalize on their chances on the day. Honduras played Spain next and lost 2-0. They are yet to win a game or even score a goal in the 2010 World Cup . However if they win against Switzerland today, they have an outside chance of qualifying to the next round alive.

Honduras are fourth on the Group H table with no points. They cannot go through as Group H winners, however, if they beat Switzerland today and the Chile-Spain match ends in a win for Chile that leaves Honduras ahead of Spain and Switzerland on goal difference, they qualify.

World Cup Preview: Spain vs. Honduras

This is a must win game for tournament favourites and European Champions Spain. No one could have predicted that Spain would lose to Switzerland 1-0 in their World Cup opener leaving them not top of Group H but sharing space at the bottom with Honduras making today’s game crucial to their World Cup campaign.

Spain

Ranking: 2

Spain have top-class players and they did very little wrong in their match against Switzerland except that they couldn’t score and conceded a cheap goal to Switzerland due to a miscommunication between the defenders and Iker Casillas in goal. La Roja would have sorted that out and will be raring to go against the Honduras. Vincente Del Bosque’s team knows that this is a must win game for them and they will put their shocking defeat behind them. Also, unlike Switzerland, Honduras cannot afford to draw this match either and therefore cannot sit back and just defend. They will have to go forward and attack which will leave space to the Spanish and everyone know what happens when you give the Spanish team space to play their game… they score plenty of goals. Vincete Del Bosque will probably go with a 4-4-2 formation, with both strikers David Villa and Fernando Torres starting for Spain. This means Sergio Busquets is most likely to be dropped. Another change could be the incorporation of Jesus Navas on the right wing rather than David Silva in attacking midfield. Cesc Fabregas might once again find himself on the bench, awaiting to make his World Cup 2010 debut. Sergio Ramos, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique and Joan Capdevila  will retain their positions at the back. Andres Iniesta who suffered an injury during the Switzerland match  is still not a 100% fit and will most likely not start for Spain.

Honduras

Ranking: 38

Honduras are the weakest link in Group H. They lost only by a goal to Chile and are level on points with Spain as they go into this match. Theoretically they have as much of a chance as Spain to qualify for the knock-stages of the tournament. In reality, Chile’s 1-0 scoreline over them does not tell the entire story of a match where Honduras did not create any chances and in fact they managed only one touch  inside the Chilean opposition penalty area over the entire duration of the game. Secondly, Chile have very limited resources and are struggling with injuries, it would be impossible for them to beat a top-class team like Spain. However, one can never underestimate confidence and belief in football and the Spainiards loss to Switzerland must have boosted the Hondurans in to believing that anything was possible. Reinaldo Rueda’s team are without striker David Suazo and midfielder Julio Cesar Leon who suffered an injury before the Chile match and is still recovering. He will be replaced by Jerry Palacios, who has set of a record of sorts by playing in the same World Cup with two of his brothers Johnny and Wilson. Spain are one of the scariest of all attack minded teams and the Honduran defense lead goalkeeper Noel Valladares will have to remain very focusedor else risk finding out just why their opponents are nicknamed La Furia Roja.

Manager Speak

“They are going to play football, it will not be easy to beat Honduras. We will play our game, take the initiative.” -Vincente Del Bosque, Spain manager

“We know we can give more. We have the strength to withstand the demands of Spain.” – Reinaldo Rueda, Honduras manager

Stars to Watch Out For

Spain: David Villa, Fernando Torres, Xavi Hernandez

Honduras: Noel Valladares, Jerry Palacios

Go Figure!

Honduras are winless in their last six matches, failing to score in five of them.

Spain had won 45 games out of 48 prior to their opening group defeat by Switzerland.

Honduras have only ever beaten two European nations – Slovenia and Latvia – in 14 attempts.

Spain’s only loss in 14 matches against a north and central American nation came a year ago at the hands of the USA in Bloemfontein.

World Cup Preview: Chile vs. Switzerland

Chile played Honduras in their last game and won 1-0, whileSwitzerland pulled off one of the biggest upsets of 2010 World Cup so far, by beating Spain 1-0. So, both Chile and Switzerland sit at the top of Group H with 3 points, making them the best teams in the group that also features tournament favourites Spain! A win for either of the teams today, will all but guarantee a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.

Chile

Ranking: 18

Chile was one of the few teams in the World Cup who impressed in their very first game. They played a very attacking game and ran Honduras ragged. The 1-0 scoreline doesn’t seem to do justice to what was an incredibly entertaining and very convincing display by Marcelo Bielsa team. Chile play almost the same brand of football attractive and attacking football as Spain and they will look to dominate possession with  Humberto Suazo and Jean Beausejour leading their attack.Chilean midfielder Alexis Sanchez, who was very impressive in the game against Honduras will look to test the Swiss with his dribbles down the wing and  long-range shots. Mauricio Isla and Gary Medel will provide a defensive shield for Chile with Waldo Ponce and Arturo Vidal covering the wings. Even through a draw in today’s game would not see Chile out of the competition, they wouldn’t want to go into their last game against Spain (who will beat Honduras)  level on points.

Switzerland

Ranking: 24

Switzerland play a highly organised defensive game and having kept Spain from scoring in their first match, you know that they are good at the game they play. They will know exactly what to expect from Chile as the Chileans game is very similar to that of the Spaniards. However, unlike Spain, Chile will not become complacent. Switzerland having already gotten 3 points from a game from which no one really expected them to salvage even one would want to win today to all but secure their position in the last 16. Ottmar Hitzfeld will once again put out a very defensive 4-2-3-1 formation with the excellent Diego Benaglio in goal with defenders Stephan Lichtsteiner, Stephane Grichting and Steve Von Bergen replacing the injured Philippe Sendoros. Switzerland’s midfielders Gokhan Inler and Tranquillo Barnetta will look to support their defenders to keep the Chileans at bay. Stikers Eren Derdiyok and Blaise Nkufo will most likely lead the attack for Switzerland even though Alexander Frei has recovered from injury. Valon Behrami has also recovered from injury and he might be on the bench for the Swiss.

Spain are not easy to contain but Chile might prove harder to contain for the Swiss. However,  both these teams do what they do very well and might cancel each other out.

Manager Speak

“The Swiss victory was very valuable to them, and you should give credit to Switzerland for that rather than taking it away from Spain.” – Marcelo Bielsa, Chile manager

“Chile is a team that’s extremely dangerous, they’re also very aggressive when it comes to forward play, more aggressive than Spain even, so we’ve got to reinforce our defense work, we have to be more concentrated in order not to concede a goal. – Ottmar Hitzfeld, Switzerland manager

Stars to Watch Out For

Chile: Alexis Sanchez, Humberto Suazo

Switzerland: Eren Derdiyok, Diego Benaglio, Blaise Nkufo

Go Figure!

Switzerland have failed to win their four matches against South American sides in the World Cup (three defeats and one draw)

Chile have failed to win their last eight World Cup fixtures against European sides (five defeats and three draws)
